SC/Tetra
General purpose thermo-fluid analysis system with unstructured mesh

SC/Tetra is a general purpose thermo-fluid simulation software that uses a hybrid mesh to accurately represent complex shapes and model geometry. Features such as a sophisticated mesh generation system, high speed computing, low memory consumption, and a user-friendly interface throughout to increase user efficiency.

KEY FEATURES

An unstructured mesh is created using tetrahedron, pentahedron, hexahedron, and/or polyhedron elements. This allows for a mesh that represents the model with high accuracy. As a result, unstructured mesh is used for applications where precise representation of the geometry is crucial. Examples of applications that benefit from an unstructured mesh include vehicle aerodynamics, flow inside duct parts, and turbomachinery.

  • Wizard driven analysis conditions provide an easy to learn approach to setting up and performing a CFD simulation.
  • SC/Tetra uses finite volume method which uses vertex centered control volume. This reduces the number of closed volumes without sacrificing accuracy.
  • Based on geometry and flow field the mesh is automatically generated to efficiently analyze the problem. Mesh refinement is concentrated on regions where there are high velocity and pressure gradients and where geometry is complex.
  • By overlapping a stationary mesh with a moving mesh, motion such as deformation, rotation, contact of solids, and multiple overlapping rotating region can be considered during an analysis.
  • Tiny details that do not have a significant impact on the field can be removed by “wrapping” the geometry and removing features below a certain threshold. Wrapping is also used to remove defects in a model that prevent closed volumes from being recognized.

Introduced over thirty years ago, scSTREAM has serviced the electronics and architectural industries by providing high accuracy and high efficiency CFD solutions. During this time scSTREAM has mainly been characterized by its overwhelming user-friendly interfaces and implementation of a structured Cartesian mesh.

A structured mesh is simple, easy to construct, and fast to solve. This mesh is comprised of many small cuboids. It is most useful for applications where tiny details and surface curvature do not have a strong effect on the overall flow field. Applications that benefit from a structured mesh include: electronics cooling, HVAC, and architecture.

  • Wizard driven analysis conditions provide an easy to learn approach to setting up and performing a CFD simulation.
  • Using a structured mesh, models can quickly and easily be converted into a computational domain without the needed model preparation that is typical of an unstructured mesh.
scSTREAM uses a structured Cartesian mesh. Structured meshes are composed of many small cuboids, so it is very easy and quick to construct. In applications where attention to tiny details and curved surfaces do not have a strong effect on the simulation a structured mesh becomes very beneficial.
  • For a Cartesian mesh, each element face normal are aligned with the axis’s, making the calculation faster by reducing the number of calculations needed to determine the flux.
  • Flow generated from moving objects can be considered during translation, rotation, or elastic deformation of an object. The mesh of the moving object is created separately from the stationary mesh, this makes moving an object large distances computationally inexpensive.
  • scSTREAM interfaces directly with BIM 2.0 Autodesk® Revit® and GRAPHISOFT ARCHICAD. This allows for direct part targeting and the part tree can be kept and simplified. IFC format can be imported directly. In addition to architecture there is a tool designed specifically designed to create precise electrical circuit components. After specifying design parameters, Electronic Parts Maker can consider various semiconductor packages such as: QFP, SOP, and BGA. Both Delphi and Two-Resistor modeling are also included.

Thermal Design Tool for Electronics

HeatDesigner uses core technology from scSTREAM to perform thermal fluid analysis specifically designed for electronic cooling. HeatDesigner’s performance is optimized for applications that do not require precise reproduction of fine geometrical curvature to predict an accurate flow field. However, HeatDesigner is capable of accommodating meshes with over one hundred million elements, enabling it to capture fine geometrical details. Like scSTREAM, the major advantages of HeatDesigner are fast calculation times and low memory consumption.
